Yasukuni Shrine (靖国神社, Yasukuni Jinja) is a controversial Shinto Shrine in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan. The shrine is dedicated to the kami (spirits) of all those who died fighting for the Emperor of Japan. Over 2 million kami are enshrined at Yasukuni. Of these, about 1,000 were convicted of war crimes after World War II. On August 15 nationalists, gangsters, politicians, and leftist protesters converge on Yasukuni Shrine.
